I do what I can

Random thoughts from Mauricio Teixeira…

A complex film, or am I just asleep?

I’ve just finished watching Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children (IMDB). I was first dragged by it because of the amazing graphics quality. Oh yeah. CGI is almost there! Some times you can be really confused about what is real and what is not (hint: nothing is real).

After 1h40m of a very nice orchestrated film (great greaphics, nice music, good rythm) I finished up with more questions than I started. Mostly because I’ve never played any of the famous saga games (there are 13, AFAIK), I’ve already watched The Spirits Within, which gave me a nice taste of the saga. However, besides the references to a “higher earth power” (Gaia on “Spirits Within” or Lifestream on “Advent Children”) the stories are very much different. Either they are, or I’m too blind to see the similarities.

Anyway. Apart from the hiper-exagerated swords, and the characteristic japanese-cartoon type battles, it’s worth the time spent.

Have a nice time! 🙂

  1. None of the main series Final Fantasy games are set in the same world or use any of the same characters. Advent Children is a sequel to Final Fantasy 7, which was possibly the biggest of all the games, and you _really_ need to have played the game to get what’s going on in the movie. Get a playstation (or emulator) and play it, you won’t be sorry 🙂

  2. You haven’t really tasted Final Fantasy with The Spirits Within. It has nothing to do with the games and do not “feel” like them at all (which is why gamers were not enthusiastic about it).

As AdamW commented, Advent Children is a very direct sequel to FFVII, the first 3D FF, the first US hit and the most popular to date (though I doubt it’s the biggest). The movie is not complex at all, but if you’re unfamiliar with the game you will not understand most of its references. Try at least reading something about the history, it will make you appreciate the movie more (though you’ll only *really* appreciate what the movie offers if you play the game; it’s a big piece of fanservice, really).

  4. Boiko: yep, by “biggest” I meant “most popular”. Though it is a pretty big game in size terms, too 🙂
